Let me tell you about the first yoga class I attended that made me feel worse about myself than when I walked in.
The instructor was lovely. The space was lovely. The other students, flowing from pose to pose like they'd been born doing this, were lovely. But me? I was two beats behind every cue, overheating under the fluorescent lights, desperately trying to remember whether my left hand was supposed to be where my right foot was, and completely unable to land in the present moment that everyone else seemed to be so effortlessly inhabiting.
I left feeling like I had failed at relaxation. Which, if you know anything about the AuDHD experience, is almost funny.
Almost.
Here's what I didn't know then: I wasn't bad at yoga. The yoga was just bad for me. And those are very different things.
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM IS THE STARTING POINT
AuDHD — the combination of autism and ADHD — is fundamentally a nervous system difference. Not a deficit, not a disorder in the pejorative sense, but a genuinely different way of processing sensory input, regulating attention, and navigating the world. Research has found that autistic individuals commonly show signs of chronic autonomic hyperarousal — higher resting heart rates, lower heart rate variability, and atypical reactivity to sensory and social stimuli — compared to non-autistic peers. [1] In practical terms, this means our nervous systems are often running hotter than those around us. More input, more intensity, more noise — even when the room is quiet.
What that means day-to-day is that many of us are stuck in a kind of low-level fight-or-flight that we can't always name or explain. Dysregulated without a clear reason. Exhausted by things that shouldn't be exhausting. Overwhelmed in environments that other people find neutral.
The nervous system doesn't lie. And for a long time, I didn't understand that yoga — practised the right way — is one of the most direct, scientifically-supported tools for actually speaking to it.
Movement and breath give the nervous system something real to anchor to. Not a thought. Not a plan. Something physical, present, and undeniable.
When we breathe slowly and deliberately — particularly when we extend the exhale — we activate the parasympathetic nervous system. The part that says: you are safe. You can rest. The threat has passed. This works via the vagus nerve, which during exhalation releases a neurotransmitter that slows the heart rate and shifts the body out of sympathetic overdrive. [2] For neurotypical people, this is a pleasant de-stress experience. For AuDHD brains that have been signalling low-grade threat for most of the day, it can feel like someone finally turned the volume down.
BUT WAIT — DOESN'T YOGA REQUIRE STILLNESS?
This is the myth I want to gently dismantle, because I believed it for years.
Yoga does not require stillness. It requires presence — and there is a crucial difference. Stillness is about the body not moving. Presence is about the mind being here, with what is happening, right now. And for ADHD brains in particular, presence is actually much easier to achieve through movement than through sitting still.
Think about it. When you're flowing through a sun salutation, your brain has something to actually do. It's tracking your body in space, coordinating breath with movement, noticing what feels tight, deciding whether to go deeper or ease back. That is a full-brain task. Research into mindful movement and skilled attention supports exactly this: motor plans, attention, and executive goals are seen as mutually co-defining — meaning that moving with intention actually trains the attention system, rather than distracting from it. [3] For ADHD brains, that's not a workaround. That's the whole game.
Multiple studies have now found that structured yoga practice improves inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms in ADHD populations, with mindfulness-based movement showing particular promise for building self-regulation — the very skill that ADHD makes most difficult. [4], [5]
WHAT "DESIGNED FOR AUDHD" ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE
When I started building Undod Yoga, I thought back to every yoga experience that had sent me home feeling worse — and I asked myself why. The answers were consistent.
Unpredictability. Not knowing what was coming next meant my brain spent half the class in anticipatory anxiety rather than in the practice. So in my sessions, I always tell students what we're going to do before we do it. The sequence is predictable. There are no surprise elements, no sudden shifts in intensity, no "now we're going to do something completely different." You always know where you are.
Sensory overwhelm. Yoga studios are often intensely sensory environments — incense, music, mirrors, other bodies in close proximity. For some of us, that's too much input before we've even started moving. In an accessible, neurodivergent-friendly space, sensory elements are considered. Lighting is gentle. Music, if it's there at all, is there to support rather than stimulate. Nobody is going to burn something right next to your face.
Social pressure. The unspoken competition of group yoga classes — the sense that you should be further along, more flexible, more centred, more at peace — is genuinely toxic for brains that are already running a harsh internal commentary. A good neurodivergent-friendly class actively dismantles that. No mirrors. No comparisons. Your mat is your world for the duration of the practice.
Verbal instructions that assume a lot. "Move into warrior two" means something if you've been practising for a while. It means almost nothing if you're new, or if your brain processes spatial instructions differently. Clear, step-by-step guidance — body part by body part, with time to arrive before the next cue — changes everything.
THE HYPERFOCUS GIFT
Here is something I genuinely love about teaching AuDHD students: when the environment is right and the anxiety is lowered, the hyperfocus kicks in.
And hyperfocus in yoga is extraordinary.
Once an AuDHD brain locks onto the breath, onto the sensation in a particular muscle, onto the precise alignment of a pose — it goes deep in a way that genuinely surprises people. Students who told me they couldn't meditate find themselves in extended states of focused attention without even trying. Students who said their minds never stopped discover that movement gave them an anchor strong enough to actually hold them.
This isn't a happy accident. It's the nervous system doing what it does brilliantly: going all in, when the conditions are finally right for it to do so. The research on yoga and cognitive engagement suggests that the combined demands of movement, breath regulation, and body awareness may more directly engage the brain's attention and autonomic regulation networks than seated mindfulness practice alone. [6]

A NOTE ON MASKING, AND WHY THE MAT IS A SAFE PLACE TO STOP
Most of us who are AuDHD — especially those diagnosed late, or still undiagnosed — have spent years masking. Performing neurotypicality. Suppressing stimming, hiding overwhelm, pretending we followed the conversation, laughing at the right moment, keeping our face neutral when inside something is crashing.
Masking is exhausting in a way that is genuinely hard to explain to people who haven't done it. It costs something real. Research consistently links autistic camouflaging — masking, compensation, and assimilation — to poorer mental health outcomes including anxiety, depression, and reduced self-esteem. [7], [8] It is not a neutral strategy. It takes a toll.
One of the things I wanted Undod Yoga to be, from the very beginning, is a place where you don't have to do that.
You can stim on the mat. You can rock in child's pose. You can make a sound when something releases. You can tell me the lights are too bright and I will deal with the lights. You can come in dysregulated and leave without apologising for it. You can be exactly as you are, and the practice will meet you there.
Because that's the whole point of undod. Unity. Not unity as conformity — everyone doing the same thing the same way at the same time. Unity as wholeness. Your mind and your body, in conversation. Your nervous system, finally given the conditions it needed to settle.
SO — DO AUDHD BRAINS THRIVE IN YOGA?
Not in every yoga class. Not in every environment. Not under every instructor.
But in a practice that is structured, predictable, sensory-aware, and genuinely non-judgmental? In a space where the practice bends to fit you, rather than demanding you contort yourself to fit it?
Yes. Wholeheartedly, from experience, yes.
Your brain is not broken. It just needs a different door.
